NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 3, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — W Algarve is proud to announce that it has earned its third consecutive Green Key certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility, sustainability, and conscious hospitality in Southern Portugal.
Green Key is one of the hospitality industry’s leading environmental certifications, recognizing properties that meet rigorous standards across energy and water conservation, waste reduction, responsible sourcing, environmental management and guest engagement. This certification recognizes the property’s dedication to its guests, that when choosing to stay at W Algarve, they are making a difference at an environmental and social sustainability level.
“We’re proud to receive this recognition for the third consecutive year, and remain committed to finding new ways to create more conscious and meaningful travel experiences,” says Christian Humbert, General Manager at W Algarve. “This certification reflects our team’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, and our belief that there is always more we can do. We’re continuously exploring and implementing new initiatives that allow us to operate more thoughtfully and further our goal of making a positive impact on the environment and the community around us.”
At W Algarve, sustainability is woven into guest experiences and daily operations. The hotel is powered by 100% renewable electricity and has installed 144 rooftop water-heating panels, helping to avoid the release of approximately 185 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. The property has also eliminated most single-use plastics by providing glass water bottles, replacing takeaway packaging with paper containers, and installing filtered water dispensers throughout the property. In each of the accommodations, smart technology reduces energy use without guests having to lift a finger. With the property’s smart system, the air conditioner automatically shuts off when windows are opened. The property strictly uses sustainable amenities and has dual-flush toilets to minimize water waste.
W Algarve works closely with Refúgio Aboim Ascensão in Faro through donations of toys, clothing, shoes and beds, while also hosting special experiences at the resort for children supported by the institution. The resort also supports Tiny Shelter in Guia through annual donations of food and towels, helping care for more than 90 rescued dogs. The resort also supports CASA Albufeira through regular donations of clothing and hotel linen, helping vulnerable members of the local community.
The hotel also participates in Nespresso’s capsule recycling program and recycled about 350 pounds of coffee capsules throughout 2025. The wider program contributed to the donation of over 230,000 pounds of rice, equivalent to approximately 2.15 million meals, to families supported by Banco Alimentar.
Across the property’s six dining venues, the menus rotate seasonally to support local farmers and reduce carbon footprint, with 90% of fish sourced directly from the Algarve coast. The ingredients used for each dish are utilized to its full potential, like turning leftover orange peels into a homemade compote, served at breakfast. The menus are paperless, accessible via QR codes, which are also available on physical cubes in each room for guests to browse at their leisure.
