Redding, CA / Storyteller / Oct 05, 2026 /

More than 14,000 older adults in Redding may prefer to remain in their homes as they age, according to a new analysis from Visiting Angels Senior Home Care Redding combining local U.S. Census Bureau population data with national aging-in-place research from AARP. Visiting Angels is an organization that offers expert home care in Redding and has been in business since 1998.

The analysis highlights the potential scale of aging-in-place demand in Redding, where seniors already represent a significant portion of the local population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Redding had an estimated population of 94,092 as of July 1, 2025. Approximately 20.2% of the city’s residents are age 65 or older, meaning roughly 19,000 Redding residents fall within the senior population.

At the same time, national research from AARP found that 77% of adults age 50 and older want to remain in their current homes as they age.

Applying that national aging-in-place preference to Redding’s estimated senior population suggests that approximately 14,600 local seniors could prefer to remain at home as they grow older.

The estimate underscores an important question facing families throughout Redding: As more residents reach their senior years, how can families help aging loved ones remain at home safely, comfortably, and independently?

More Than 1 in 5 Redding Residents Are Seniors

Redding’s senior population represents a substantial share of the community. With 20.2% of residents age 65 or older, more than one out of every five people in the city is a senior.

Based on the Census Bureau’s 2025 population estimate, that percentage translates to approximately 19,000 residents age 65 and older.

The size of this population makes aging in place more than an individual family decision. It is an increasingly relevant issue for the Redding community as a whole.

AARP’s 2021 Home and Community Preferences Survey found that 77% of adults age 50 and older would prefer to remain in their current homes as they age. The survey also found that 79% wanted to remain in their communities.

However, wanting to remain at home does not necessarily mean seniors can do so without additional support. AARP reported that 33% of adults age 50 and older said their homes would need modifications to allow them to remain there safely and independently.

For some older adults, changes to the physical home may be enough. Others may eventually need assistance with everyday activities, mobility, meal preparation, personal care, companionship, or supervision.

What the 14,000+ Estimate Means for Redding

The Visiting Angels Senior Home Care Redding analysis estimates the potential number of local seniors who may share the aging-in-place preference identified in AARP’s national research.

The calculation produced an estimate of approximately 14,641 Redding seniors:

94,092 Redding residents × 20.2% age 65+ × 77% aging-in-place preference = approximately 14,641 seniors

For clarity, the 14,641 figure is a modeled estimate rather than the result of a survey of Redding residents. It assumes that Redding residents age 65 and older have aging-in-place preferences similar to those reported nationally among AARP’s survey respondents age 50 and older.

The figure should therefore be interpreted as an estimate of the potential scale of local aging-in-place preference, not an exact count of seniors currently receiving or actively seeking professional home care.

Aging in Place Can Require More Than a Safe Home

Remaining at home can become more challenging as mobility, balance, memory, or the ability to complete daily activities changes with age.

For families, one of the most difficult transitions can occur when an older relative is still able to live at home but no longer feels completely safe doing so alone.

Daytime needs may include preparing meals, getting dressed, completing household tasks, attending appointments, or moving safely throughout the home. For seniors who require more continuous assistance, nighttime can introduce additional concerns, particularly when getting out of bed or navigating the home without help nearby.

This is where options such as 24-hour home care can become part of an aging-in-place plan. Rather than requiring a senior to leave a familiar environment solely because additional assistance is needed, professional caregivers can provide support in the home based on the individual’s needs and schedule.

Methodology

Visiting Angels Senior Home Care Redding developed the 14,000+ estimate using publicly available data from the U.S. Census Bureau and AARP Research.

First, the analysis used the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 population estimate for Redding, California, of 94,092 residents.

Second, the Census Bureau reports that 20.2% of Redding residents are age 65 or older. Applying that percentage to the 2025 population estimate produces an estimated senior population of approximately:

94,092 × 0.202 = 19,006.6

This was then combined with AARP’s 2021 Home and Community Preferences Survey finding that 77% of U.S. adults age 50 and older want to remain in their current homes as they age.

Applying the 77% national benchmark to Redding’s estimated population age 65 and older produces:

19,006.6 × 0.77 = 14,635.1

Due to rounding of the Census Bureau’s published 20.2% age share, the result should be treated as an approximation rather than a precise population count. For this reason, the report describes the finding conservatively as more than 14,000 Redding seniors potentially preferring to age at home.

There are several limitations to the analysis. AARP’s 77% figure is a national statistic and is not specific to Redding or Shasta County. AARP surveyed adults age 50 and older, while the local Census calculation uses residents age 65 and older. Additionally, a preference to remain at home does not necessarily indicate a preference for, need for, or current use of professional home care services.

The resulting figure is therefore intended to estimate the potential prevalence of aging-in-place preferences among Redding’s senior population rather than measure current demand for home care.
